Steam Locomotive is a detailed diagram print. It tells the story of a classic wood-burning 4-4-0 engine, the kind that helped knit the United States together in the 19th century. The engine sprawls across the page like a mechanical dragon, every major system carefully drawn and labeled. A guiding narrative walks kids from the tender full of wood and water, into the roaring firebox and boiler, up to the steam dome, and finally down to the piston and driving wheels that carry the train forward.
Around that main journey, discover other details—the whistle that sings with steam, the sand that helps slipping wheels grip the rails, the tall smokestack that catches sparks before they set the prairie on fire. This is a train poster that doesn’t just show what a locomotive looks like; it reveals how heat turns into motion.

Data and design provenance
The primary visual reference for “Steam Locomotive” is a set of plans for the wood burning passenger locomotive “No. 44” featured in American Locomotive Engineering and Railway Mechanism (New York, 1871) by G. Weissenborn. Supplementary details for locomotive parts and operation came from the Catechism of the Locomotive (Bridgeport, 1874) by Matthias N. Forney. “How fire is used to make the engine go” by Marie Neurath was the original inspiration.
