Food Energy

Food Energy is an illustrated wall chart that turns everyday snacks and meals into a colorful map of how they power our bodies. Each food is placed by how much of its energy comes from fats, proteins, or carbohydrates, so kids can see the difference between, say, an avocado, a pork chop, and a bowl of rice. Clear, friendly text explains what each macronutrient does—quick energy, steady energy, growth energy—inviting curious eyes to trace what they love to eat and how it fuels them.

A small inset focuses on carbohydrate-rich foods, showing which ones get most of their energy from sugars. The whole poster reads like a conversation starter for kitchen tables and classrooms: simple enough for kids to follow, rich enough that grownups will find themselves looking twice at familiar foods. Data and design provenance:
Primary data source is the “Foundation Foods” database by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service, April 2024. Macronutrients chosen are carbohydrate, by difference; protein; and total lipid (fat). Each nutrient energy contribution was calculated using food calorie conversion factors specific to each food. Carbohydrate inset chart was calculated using “sugars, total” nutrient and supplemented with nutrition facts from MyFoodData. Each food is hand illustrated.
